Microsoft submitted a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum requesting the transfer of the domain name bing-news.com from Prakash Prasad Timilsina.

Microsoft developed the new search engine Bing and is in the process to register the “Bing” trademark in a number of jurisdictions including the United States. Prakash Prasad Timilsina registered the disputed domain name “bing-news.com” on May 28, 2009, the same day when Steve Ballmer announced Bing at the All Thing Digital Conference.

Microsoft stated that the respondent has infringed its pending trademark by using the domain name bing-news.com to offer a competing news service for commercial gain.

Prakash Prasad Timilsina stated that

  • It was a coincidence that he registered the domain name right after Microsoft announced their new search engine.

  • He was inspired by the name of “bingmail.com.au” which is owned by a third party.

  • He wants to respect the trademark dispute by changing his service to something else.

In the end, the dispute resolution panel found Microsoft to be the rightful owner of the domain name. Prior to this dispute, bing-news.com was a online forum powered by phpBB. Below is a screen shot.

After the dispute, bing-news.com says:

This website is in process to be transfered to Microsoft Corporation.
